Victorian Order of Nurses


VON is Canada’s largest, non-profit, charitable home care and community care organization addressing community health and social needs. The services are provided by nurses, other health professionals, support service workers and volunteers.

Meals On Wheels

Deliver nutritious hot or frozen meals at noon to home-bound individuals in Hamilton and Stoney Creek.  Both drivers and services needed Monday to Friday during the lunch hour.  Provides a security check and short visit to the recipient.  Mileage paid.

Volunteer Visiting

Provide friendship to lonely seniors or adults with disabilities and caregiver relief.  Visits can be on a flexible basis.  Training and ongoing support is provided.

Hospice Volunteer Service/Bereavement Support

Offering emotional and practical support to individuals, of all ages, who are suffering from a life-threatening or terminal illness.  All volunteers are provided with 30 hours of palliative care education.  Support meetings, annual Service of Remembrance, bereavement support are all part of services provided.

Good Beginnings

Providing support for new parent(s) with infants for first 6 months of a newborn’s life.  Education provided.  Cuddles and hugs are part of the “perks”.

SMART Program (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together)

An exercise program designed to maintain or improve functional mobility and independence for adults 55 years and up.  Volunteers receive Canadian Centre of Activity and Aging’s Seniors Fitness Instructor Certification training by a coordinator of volunteers.

In-Home – Provide one-to-one visits with ten simple exercises in a client’s home.

Groups – Lead or co-lead a 1-hour group exercise fitness class.

Tele-Touch

Provide a phone call to a lonely senior to offer reassurance, security and decrease loneliness.

Congregate Dining

Volunteers provide transportation and assistance to individuals so that they can interact with peers and to enjoy a delicious and nutritious meal.  This service is offered twice a month at St. Joseph’s Centre for Ambulatory Health Services and Idlewyld Manor.

Volunteer-Assisted Transportation

Provide a drive to a medical appointment and friendly support while waiting.  Involves door-to-door personal service and assisting those with canes and wheeled walkers.  Mileage paid.

Shopping By Bus

Offers a free bus service for tenants in selected seniors’ apartment buildings to do their grocery shopping, assisted by volunteers.

Adult Day Program

Volunteers assist Day Program staff with client activities of providing structured social recreation programming and respite in a supportive environment to individuals affected by cognitive impairment and/or physical disability.

Office Volunteering

Office volunteers are essential in the day-to-day operations of the VON.  Appeals to individuals who wish to work for a couple of hours once a week in an office setting.  Tasks may include filing, mailing preparation, photocopying and some help to collect information from volunteers who are visiting clients in the community.

Public Relations/Committee Volunteers

Persons interested in joining a team of volunteers who enjoy meeting the public at displays, events and organizations that promote volunteering opportunities that VON Hamilton offers.

Fundraising

Volunteers work on special projects and events, such as silent auctions and golf tournament to raise awareness and financial support for VON Hamilton’s charitable activities.

Enthusiastic people with business skills or community development experience may consider volunteering on our Board of Directors.
