No matter what you’re up to this summer; whether it be working, summer school, traveling or just generally lazing around, it’s really important to keep yourself engaged in your community! Summer is a great time to volunteer; you might have more time than you usually would during the school year, and there are TONS of great opportunities which only run when the weather is warm. Whether you’re living in Hamilton or you’re back home, take some time to volunteer with a cause that you feel passionate about; it’s a proven way to beat that summer boredom!
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Burlington Sound of Music Festival
Seriously, who doesn’t love summer music festivals? Go a step further than attending this year and volunteer your time as a stage hand, security person, set-up and tear-down assistant or children’s area supervisor. For more information visit www.soundofmusic.on.ca.
Summer Reading Buddies, Hamilton Public Library
Love kids? Love reading? Want an easy way to combine both? Reading Buddies is a program for kisd who require some encouragement and assistance with their reading over the summer months. Programs run on weekdays, and the hours vary by library branch; the commitment length is only for two months! For more information visit www.hpl.ca/kids
The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA runs programs year round, but if you find that your time during the school year is limited and you want to give something new a try, summer is a great time to get out there! Volunteers at the SPCA can work in areas ranging from dog walking, playing with small animals, assisting in the kennels and animal hospital or teaching sessions about animals and animal handling to groups of kids. Check them out online at www.hbspca.com
These are just a few examples of the many volunteering opportunities which exist throughout the summer; if you’re looking for more information e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll see what we can do to match you up with your perfect volunteer position.
