Arts in the City

Art is the new steel, so it’s no surprise that there are always cultural events going on in Hamilton. This month has a lot of independent art shows and a number of opportunities for up-and-coming or amateur artists to showcase their own works. If you are interested in art, or are an artist yourself, there’s no reason not to see what’s going on.

Hamilton Artists Inc. is offering open memberships to interested parties, and this is one of the best ways to get plugged in to Hamilton’s art scene. As a member, you are encouraged to submit a work of your choice for the Annual Members’ Exhibition. If you’re interested, drop off your artwork during gallery hours this week or next, and fill out a membership form at the same time, and come to the opening Friday, Nov 18th, its easy! Membership is a sliding scale between $10 and $25 annually.

If you are more interested in artistic appreciation, but not producing it yourself, you can also check out some of the events coming up:

The AGH Fall Art Sale is a four-day event running from November 3rd – 6th. The event highlights new works by established and emerging artists in a showcase of engaging paintings, sculptures, glass, jewellery, pottery, and works on paper. Admission is free, and you just might find something that catches your eye. Also, it’s a great congregation of people in the field, so you’ll be sure to have some great conversation.

The International Village is hosting their monthly “Night in the Village” fair TONIGHT! Friday Nov. 4th. The event is not only arts based, so one can dine, shop and explore the arts, all celebrated with an international flair. There will be live entertainment, an art crawl between several of the businesses, and special menu items and sales at various restaurants and shops.

The Pearl Company  is a theatre, gallery, and artistic space at 16 Steven Street. Operated by award winners Barbara Milne and Gary Santucci, the Pearl Company is a warm, atmospheric, arts and performance facility with two floors of performance, rehearsal, event, and exhibition space. The first and 2nd Friday of every month (Tonight! Friday Nov. 4th, and Friday Nov. 11th) the Pearl Company is the pick up and drop off site for “The Art Bus” – $15 service that organizes art excursions and gallery tours. With the Art Bus, you can explore Hamilton’s vibrant art scene, catch Friday night gallery openings, and even meet the local artists being exhibited. At $15, this is a steal, and a great opportunity to have an intro into Hamilton’s art scene.

Last, but definitely not least, the quintessential Hamilton art experience – the James St N. Art Crawl. This coming Friday, Nov. 11 is yet again the 2nd Friday of the month, so it’s art crawl! Be sure to check out the galleries, coffee shops, and reclaimed internal and external space along James St N in this evening of art, fun, and friends!

With so much going on, it’s not hard to get out and see some great art. And don’t forget that your McMaster Full-time student card gives you access to the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the McMaster University Art Gallery whenever (among other places too!).
