The Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction is a group made up of residents from Hamilton and surrounding areas such as Ancaster and Stoney Creek. These individuals came together in 2005 with the common goal of understanding and alleviating the severe levels of poverty, as these issues differ in category and severity throughout Hamilton. They have framed their work around the goal of “Making Hamilton the Best Place to Raise a Child”.
The HRPR works to understand current community needs and how they can be met and have published a collection of reports. These reports focus primarily on the Social Assistance reform as well as National Poverty Strategy. The group has also posted a collection of “Facts about Poverty” on their website, which is great to refer to if you are currently introducing yourself to the issue.
Earlier this month the HRPR worked in combination with the McMaster Poverty Initiative to present a forum called “Claiming the Right to An Adequate Standard of Living”. The forum featured speakers such as Bruce Porter who is the Director of the Social Rights Advocacy Centre, Laura Cattari who is an activist through Advocacy Hamilton as well as a member of the HRPR and Dr. Atif Kubursi, a Professor Emeritus at McMaster University in the Department of Economics.
