Being Thrifty is Pretty Nifty!

If you are looking for a way to express your creativity, effectively harness your shallow pockets while being environmentally conscious, the Hamilton Thrift scene is for you!

As a student, I am always looking for new ways to save money which, preferably, do not include the “peanut-butter on crackers” diet. Thrift stores can be a truly exciting way to save money on clothing, jewellery, housewares, fabrics, toys, furniture; the list goes on and on. Thrift stores can also be a  great place to assemble last minute costumes! You will of course encounter some impenetrable jungles in your thrift shop travels, but if you are willing to do the work, there are unique treasures to be uncovered in addition to simple classics.

In my travels around Hamilton I have been able to pick up a few classy tops, dresses and some very colourful jewellery. Here are a couple of places where I have had the best luck:

Deja Vu New and Used Clothing Accessories

Talize

Some thrift shops even support external community projects. For example, the New Horizons Thrift Store on James Street North supports the Welcome Inn Community Centre’s services and programs.

If your are willing to put in the work, or perhaps overcome certain prejudices, there are countless benefits to both to your wallet and to your community.
