Mad Pride is coming to Hamilton!
On Saturday July 27th the First Pilgrim United Church will be hosting a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in support of all those who have struggled with a “mental illness”. The only requirement is that you wear your wackiest hat! This can be one that you bring from home or one that you make when you get there.
Mad Pride is a festival founded by psychiatric survivors. It offers the opportunity for those who have been labelled as “mad” to celebrate their resilience, knowledge, creativity and overall contributions to the community. It also works to familiarize the community with the situations that lead to severe conditions of distress: poverty, exclusive societal ideology, unstable/inconsistent relationships and a lack of social support.
The event will begin with tea at 1pm, followed by open mic at 2pm. Local survivors will also showcase art up until 5pm when the event comes to a close. The event is free and wheelchair accessible. For more details, click here.
If you are able, I highly recommend attending and sharing your perspective. Even if you do not feel like you have a ton of knowledge in this regard, you have your own life experience and events like these are meant to reiterate that all perspectives are valuable.
