A Message from Councillor McHattie re: The July 2013 Storm
“West Hamilton was one of the hardest hit areas in the lower city. The Westdale North neighbourhood was particularly affected with power out for hundreds of residents until Sunday evening. Although I spoke to several homeowners, I would like to apologize for the general lack of communication from Friday evening and throughout the weekend.
The devastation from the storm has been significant. We have large trees that have knocked down pole and lines. Repairs of this nature take large crews and coordinated efforts with other teams such as forestry. When I spoke with Horizon Utilities , they explained that in storms such as this, they often find that there is “trouble hidden behind the trouble”. Meaning that when they fix the original cause of the outage at the feeder level to restore as many customers as possible, they discover a number of lateral feeds with trees / wires down, where a second level of repair is required – that was the case in Westdale North .
There are isolated houses that may still be without power (we learned of two more today) – if you are aware of these houses please call Nikola in our office (905-546-2416) and we’ll liaise with Horizon to make sure the address is on their lists.
Continuing this week, City Forestry crews will be in the neighbourhoods removing debris from fallen trees. At City Council, I’ll be looking for a summary of our storm response so we can look for ways to improve. With recent extraordinary storms in Toronto and Calgary still fresh in our minds, the City will need to review policies and procedures, as significant storms are becoming more common”.
