Community Spotlight: P.A.W.S!

Hamilton People & Animal Welfare Solutions is a pretty darn unique organization – and with a name like P.A.W.S, it’s hard to be confused about who they work for. Founded in the fall of 2010, the idea for P.A.W.S came out of a frustration with the gaps in the system for people and their pets experiencing violence, homelessness, marginal housing, incarceration, or hospitalization. Being separated from an animal companion is heart-wrenching at the best of times, but can be even more devastating when living in unstable circumstances or experiencing traumatic events. The programs that P.A.W.S offers help to alleviate some of the challenges faced by low income and vulnerable Hamiltonians with beloved furry friends.

You may be wondering what kinds of challenges one may face. Imagine having to choose between leaving your animal companion or living without a home. Imagine not being able to provide the proper health care and nutrition that your pet needs, or not being able to access an emergency shelter because you have a pet. Only 6 shelters in Canada advertise as being pet-friendly, and none of these are in Hamilton. Imagine needing hospitalization, but not having the resources to have your animal looked after in a kennel. All of these examples are realities for many, and that is why P.A.W.S is here. It really is a one-of-a-kind organization making a positive impact in Hamilton.

Programs provided by P.A.W.S include Temporary Fostering/Kenneling care, vaccinations, Mission Veterinary Care Clinics, and more – you can read all about them here.

Interested in getting involved? There will be a Volunteer and Open Information Session on Tuesday June 17th  from 4:30-7:00 pm at 35 Aikman Ave. You can also e-mail to learn more about potential opportunities!
