Volunteer Opportunities at the Newcomer Youth Centre

The Newcomer Youth Centre of the YMCA in downtown Hamilton is looking for volunteers! This is a great opportunity to help introduce Canadian culture to youth who are new to the country as well as facilitate their settlement into Hamilton.

Volunteers must be able to commit 2-4 hours per week for approximately 4-12 months and are required to complete a Criminal Reference and Vulnerable Sector police reference check. Each volunteer will have support from a Youth Settlement Worker or Library Settlement Worker.

There are three different volunteer opportunities that you can get involved in:

1. Youth Homework Club – Homework Assistant 

 This position is for anyone who is interested in assisting newcomer youth with Canadian homework and helping them to develop their English language skills.

Location: The Newcomer Youth Centre is located on the lower level of the Downtown Hamilton Family YMCA (79 James Street South)

Qualifications:

  • Willingness to help a newcomer youth work through their homework
  • Proficiency in English
  • Ability to provide explanations and understanding of at least one of the following subjects: mathematics, science, English, and/or social science
  • Patience, empathy, sensitivity, responsibility, initiative
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds
  • Basic knowledge of the Hamilton community and its resources
  • Completed Criminal Reference and Vulnerable Sector police reference check

 Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance and supervision during the homework club
  • Provide guided assistance to one or more youth completing homework assignments
  • Interact with youth and respond to their needs within reason
  • Work closely with YMCA staff members
  • Adhere to the YMCA mission, values and procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality of the YMCA and client information
  • Maintain an environment that is free of bias/favouritism

2. Newcomer Youth Centre – Youth Centre Volunteer 

 The purpose of this position is to introduce newcomer youth to Canadian culture through activities and programming, while facilitating their settlement into the Hamilton community.

Location: Newcomer Youth Centre located on the lower level of the Downtown Hamilton Family YMCA (79 James Street South)

  • Willingness to help a newcomer youth adjust to a new environment
  • Proficiency in English
  • Patience, empathy, sensitivity, responsibility, initiative
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds
  • Basic knowledge of the Hamilton community and its resources
  • Completed Criminal Reference and Vulnerable Sector police reference check

3. English Conversation Circle – Facilitator Volunteer 

This position involves facilitation of English Conversation Circles, which offers a forum where newcomer adults to Canada can gather in a safe and supportive environment in order to practice their English language speaking skills.

Location: Public Library Branches

Qualifications:

  • Experience with and/or interest in working with persons for whom English is a second language and who are involved in increasing their skills.
  • Experienced/interested in working with newcomers; people from diverse ethnic backgrounds
  • Excellent communication and active listening skills (must have a broad base of knowledge and significantly enhanced English vocabulary, and excellent articulation)
  • Dependable, self motivated, ability to work with minimal support
  • Non-judgmental, empathic, and encouraging
  • Experience learning a second language would be an asset
  • Completed Criminal Reference and Vulnerable Sector police reference check

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate a ESL Conversation Circle on a weekly basis,
  • Research/prepare weekly conversation subjects
  • Create an environment of warmth and inclusion
  • Treat all participants with dignity and respect
  • Provide an inclusive and safe environment to all
  • Adhere to the YMCA mission, values and procedures
