Today (July 10th) is the start of the 16 day long sporting event. Also today at 5 pm is the Opening Ceremonies which will include “a celebration of the diversity of the Toronto region and all of Canada, as well as the vibrant cultures of the Americas. The unforgettable and magical Opening Ceremony — a one-night-only show by Official Creative Partner, the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil — where the Pan Am Cauldron will be lit to officially start the Games.”

In this quadrennial event countries all across the America’s face off in a variety of summer sports including Athletics, Baseball, basketball, Boxing, Diving, Equestrian, Fending, Football (Soccer), Golf, Gymnastics, Karate, Rowing, Sailing, Swimming, Tennis, Wrestling, just to name a few…

Where is all of this happening?

Well the venues are all over Southern Ontario. Of course Toronto being the host city is where the opening and closing ceremonies will be occurring. Other venues include Niagra & Hamilton, Simcoe & Haliburton, Peel & Halton, York & Durham ! check out if you’re interested on seeing whats being played where.

On August 7th an 8 day long sports competition will occur that includes Archery, Athletics, Boccia, Cycling, Football, Goalball, Judo, Powerlifting, Volleyball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Basketball, Rugby and Tennis!

This event also occurs as a quadrennial event just after the Pan Am games come to a close. the Parapan Am Games include athletes that have some form of physical barrier which they don’t let stop them from competing.

According to the PanAm & Parapan Am sports website “athlete classification is a unique element of parasport, intended to ensure fair competition. As each sport at any para-Games requires different skills and competencies, the impact of impairment on the performance of the athletes varies. That’s why each sport has its own unique classification rules.”

This year hopefully with home court advantage on the athletes side they hope to exceed this mark set in Mexico. Last Parapan am games Canada finished a disappointing 8th in Gold’s and 5th in total medals.
